When words fall short, colours speak.
At the Michelle Makena Miriti Trust, we’ve seen firsthand how creativity becomes a language of healing — how a paintbrush, poem, or song can say what the heart struggles to express.
💜 From Grief to Growth
The “Art for the Earth” program was born from Makena’s deep love for both art and the planet. Even in her battle with Lupus, she found beauty in colour — using art to reflect hope, not hurt. Today, her vision lives on through young artists who turn their emotions into expression and their pain into purpose.
In collaboration with renowned artist Teacher Okanga, we’ve hosted mentorship workshops for emerging youth artists, guiding them to use art as advocacy — painting themes of environmental care, mental wellness, and resilience.
🎨 When Art Becomes Therapy
Art has a quiet power to heal. Each stroke, sketch, or sculpture allows participants to release bottled emotions, process trauma, and rebuild confidence.
Through our Creative Wellness & Expression Workshops, young people are encouraged to use music, poetry, and dance as tools for self-discovery and emotional well-being — often guided by therapists and mentors.
These sessions remind us that healing doesn’t always come through medicine alone; sometimes, it comes through creation.
🌈 The Impact So Far
- Over 30 youth artists trained through mentorship and workshops.
- A debut art exhibition, “Healing the Earth Through Colour,” held to raise funds for environmental projects.
- Publication of our first poetry anthology, inspired by Makena’s journals.
Every brushstroke tells a story. Every piece of art adds another shade to the canvas of healing our community is painting together.
🌻 The Next Chapter
We envision a permanent youth art studio and gallery — a safe space where young creatives can learn, heal, and showcase their work.
To make this dream a reality, we need support for art materials, studio space, and mentorship programs.
